Open Floor Drop-in Classes


What is Open Floor?

Open Floor is a resource based movement practice. We explore new ways of moving and responding to what is happening with intention and purpose. We learn to understand our habits and patterns for deeper insight and self awareness. The more we embody different responses in our movements, the more resources we can call on to move through life with flexibility, resilience and ease.

Things to know: This is a substance free space. Unless prompted, it is also a non-verbal space. We dance barefoot, but soft soled indoor shoes are welcome. We are not a contact improv group, so while consensual touch is welcome (when given freely, continuously, and consciously), practicing lifts, rolling on the floor, etc are best suited for a CI specific space.

What to Expect?

Our Movement Cycle includes: Open Attention, Enter, Explore, and Settle.
OPEN ATTENTION is the time we take to arrive, warm up and prepare the body for movement. We open our senses to the environment. The facilitator then offers prompts to ENTER the body, a theme and the present moment. There is ample time to EXPLORE through guided facilitation and on your own. This is where we broaden, deepen, expand and move with the Movement Resources that are offered to see how they show up in our bodies, our relations, and our lives.. At the end of each class we SETTLE…digest, integrate. This helps re-map the nervous system and allows new embodied pathways to be encoded.

Pre-requisites:

Open to any and all folks, regardless of experience, who are willing and/or comfortable dancing organically with curiosity vs instruction. There is a time for facilitated exploration and free space to follow your own rhythm. Come give Open Floor a try!

About Pre-Registration:

To avoid last minute cancellations due to low participation, Tula is requesting folks pre-register for these classes. We aim to have at least 3 movers registered by noon on each date of class, so if you know in advance that you’re able to attend, please sign up now.

That being said…I understand that work, family, unexpected life circumstances and overall energy and wellness can impact whether we’re able to attend or not. If you hesitate to register for any reason at all, you can let me know you’re a “maybe” and I’ll reach out prior to class (by 4pm) to check in and see how you’re feeling. Ideally I want to create a space that is easeful, free of pressure, and fluid…giving you the space/time needed to be spontaneous and/or free to decline depending on the ever changing landscape of your body’s needs.
